Short Elegy Biography

Gunawan Ardianto was born on Thursday, March 17^th, 1983 and is currently 24 years old. He lives in Gresik, East Java, Indonesia in a white house with a large porch. Inside his house is a very "village-like" atmosphere, with wooden floors, wooden cabinets, and glass figurines. His room contains a lot of guitars and footballers posters. Outside his room is another room with a television and exercise equipment. These are random, pointless facts.

Gunawan’s family consists of his mother (who once kept track of football careers when he were underage), his father (who Gunawan has "borrowed" many records from. Gunawan’s father currently works at a Mechanic Engineering), his brother named Edy (he must be about 35 or 36 years old now), his 2^nd brother named Anton (lives in Gresik too) and his sister named Yanti (28 years old). Gunawan also have twin brother who he never meet with, cause they died just a few months later when they were born.

“Dian” or "Jasper" (those are two of Gunawan’s nicknames "But I used to get called Jasper because everyone thought I looked like Caspar the ghost!"), “Teko” was the name given at his Junior High School. Untill now he often called by that name. He had a good childhood. Very little is known about his childhood, though, other than a few things. First, he used to be a teenage dirtbag in every school. When Daniel was younger, he fell over and a watering can went in his mouth and he had to get stitches. This is another pointless fact. He used to have braces…even more pointless, but many poeple have remarked about how perfect his eyes are. His fondest memory of being a kid is during the End of Fast and being surrounded by people, watching him opening his presents. He also recently turned vegetarian.

During the beginning of his teenage years, Dian listening to heavy metal and slow rocks music. But actually his 1^st cassette was Richard Marx “Repeat Offender” (which his dad wants him to learn by hearts the lyrics). Guitars is his first instruments that his mother bought for him then he started sing day and night. Football is also a pretty major part of the day. Gresik fields are brilliant for play, if you didn’t already know. Gunawan was very much into playing arcade games, too. Some of his favorites at the time were Winning Eleven, Football Manager, and Solitaire. School wasn’t top priority, but if he had to pick a favorite subject, it would be English.

As Gunawan got older, he started playing guitar. His first guitar was called the Rocks Axe. "I think I was 14 when I got my first guitar. For the first year, I taught myself and then I had a year’s worth of classical lessons. The first song I learnt was probably one by Saigon Kick, but the first good one I learnt was ‘don’t cry’ by Guns n’ roses. Silverchair truly original sounding groupbands fusing heavy rock with orchestral flourishes and synthetic touches with powerfully emotional lyrics, the dark and haunting "Neon Ballroom". They are my favourite band ever! We’ve got our metal roots!" There’s some more things to say about his year’s worth of classical lessons. "Someone would teach us a cover song of someone else and that would pretty muh be the lesson of the week." Other than that, Gunawan taught himself how to play guitar otodidacally.

Now that you know this stuff, we can get into the Junior High School Era. At that time, he joined a band named Snowhite. (along with Bram, Priyo and Ade. Irfan, Heru, Agus and Dadang came later). Now, lets discuss the song lyrics and poems that Gunawan has ever made. Much of them were influenced by things Gunawan saw on television as well as real life events. One key date comes to mind which is around January 1997 which is the date of when he saw a true beauty girl named (***** *********) during his study. This moment has took Gunawan’s breath away, he can’t make a difference whether she’s an angel or human. Then he started to write a song called ‘Main Reason’ (You can read it on his friendster Blogs). During the time, Snowhite also performed in small café, stages, competitions, small concert. During this time in his life, he was into all types of bands and soloist. They included Laura Pausini, Terranova, Helloween, White Lion, Steelheart, HIM, Sade, Oldies songs and others…

As time passed, even more things happened. He became vegetarian. He later became vegan. So, this brings us to 1998, a very hard year for this truly talented lead singer and guitarist. He suffered quite a lot, becoming very withdrawn. He stayed at home and played his villagers friends for a while, relaxing after a long year of touring. During this time, Gunawan stuck in a house, where many of the songs for Next Chapter Songs and Poems: Un-published were written. He’d sit in front of the fireplace alone and play guitar. He didn’t listen to any other music, except his own. He wrote hundreds of poems in this house. However, he developed many phobias, including a fear of crowds, leaving home, and food. He thought certain shapes of food felt like razors going down his throat and at restaurants, he was always suspicious, thinking perhaps his food was poisoned. This later developed into a type of ‘anorexia,’ and is the story behind Crossed Candle Light. His favorite colors are blue, black, white, grey. He also likes ADIDAS products. After the last holiday, Gunawan had a totally normal life once again, but I pretty much came home and couldn’t deal with a normal lifestyle. I had to lock myself away and do what I knew would give me personal satisfaction– writing music. But I’m a lot better now that I was at the time of writing the album. Back then I was pretty wrecked!" Gunawan said to his friend. He likes a lot of movies, but his personal favorite is Fly me to Polaris (Cecilia Cheung and Richie Ren) and Smallville. Okay, those were some even more pointless facts…want another one? Gunawan’s a Pisces…wow.

About his football career, not too good to tell. Real Madrid, Lazio and Liverpool are his Favorite football clubs. A player like Zinedine “Zizou” Zidane, Steven Gerrard and CR7 are his favourite player. Julie Estelle “The Finest mix French-Indo”, Dian Sastrowardoyo “The Real and Purest Indonesian Beauty” and also Intan Nuraini (this picture is real, when he met her at UMM Helypad) are his heroine.

Almost forget, he also had an silly accident while he was in Senior High school. His hat were took by his schoolmates, but ironically he fell down on the street and kept him for almost a month in a Darmo Hospital in Surabaya.

About his love stories? You’d better not ask him or you will cry and drowning in his elegy stories. Too sad to tell and too long to spoken. He took a philosophy “…love is the funeral of hearts. It’s rather to have a broken heart than have no love at all.” But no worries, he still loveable and have love.

His concerns at this present time are Child Abuse, Women Welfare. Children and women were a victim of the Global Capitalism around the world and Global Warming is the main factor nature destruction.

Gunawan Ardianto is like the quiet ever-so-reliable and very frank misunderstood friend I never had (Interviewed with one of Gunawan’s closest friend). When he needs to be alone, he locked himself up in his room and listened to Silverchair. He learned about circus freaks and how they’re emotionally battered; about veganism and love for animals and how they are brutally killed for food and clothing. He had anorexia nervosa. (The difference between plain anorexia and anorexia nervosa is that anorexia is often caused by vanity, peer pressure or severe desire to lose weight while nervosa is driven by paranoia.) He feared he’d get killed by accidentally swallowing sharp food. He would often get arthritis in his hands from too much guitar-playing and lack of calcium.

So, all these things that occurred in his life, this hard year are all reflected in the deep, meaningful, yet sorrowful lyrics of his most poems The whole poems concept is all Gunawan’s idea. "Every time I wrote these new lyrics, it’s like a cleansing experience. Although I remember the first few times I listened back to ‘Miss You Love by SILVERCHAIR’ and his own poems compilations ‘Complete 5^th Seasons of Sorrow and Solitude’, I felt sick. I couldn’t listen to the finished mix the whole way through: it kept bringing back bad memories. Basically it’s a musical diary of a period in my life," he once said.

There’s so many other things to know about Gunawan, but none of them are truly relevant to anything at the moment. However, this is the story of a truly talented and amazing person. He summed it up when he said, "There’s definitely a side to being in a successful man that no one really knows about, unless you’ve actually done it. But when you’re appears and people are getting into something that you’ve put everything into, I don’t think there’s a better feeling in the world."
